Europa League scores: Tottenham struggle, Ajax blown out at home

Ajax is already out of the Europa League, while Tottenham Hotspur have some serious work to do at home. Porto and Lazio were also disappointing at home.

Tottenham Hotspur and Lazio were the highest-profile teams to post poor results during Thursday's Europa League action, but the most shocking result took place in Amsterdam. Despite fielding a strong team, Ajax were absolutely destroyed at home by Salzburg, who scored three times in the first 35 minutes. Their third was the best goal anywhere during the round, scored by Soriano with a 50-plus yard chip over Jasper Cillessen.

Lazio, like Ajax, rotated heavily but still played a very strong team. They were surprisingly undone at home by Ludogorets, who scored just before halftime. They also missed a penalty in the ninth minute and played a man down for 18 minutes. Svetoslav Dyakov was shown red in the 55th, but Luis Pedro Cavanda evened up the match when he got himself sent off in the 73rd minute.

Other surprising results saw Porto draw Eintracht Frankfurt at home after conceding late on a set piece and Tottenham lose to Dnipro after Jan Vertonghen conceded an 80th-minute penalty, which was converted by Yevhen Konoplyanka.

Lyon and Basel were slightly disappointing, both drawing 0-0 away from home against weaker competition. Elsewhere, there were routine wins for Juventus, Fiorentina, Benfica and AZ, as well as quite a few competitive draws. Dynamo Kiev would have been disappointed to lose to Valencia in a home game, but due to the violence in Ukraine's capital, that game was played on a neutral site, in Cyprus.
