La Liga, Round 25 review: Two of the three title contenders fall

The title race was shaken up yet again as Barcelona and Atlético Madrid both lost, leaving Real Madrid as the king of the mountain for now.

The latest round of action in Spain's top division was shocking, to say the least. Barcelona entered the round in first place but even on points with Real Madrid and Atlético Marid. By the time all three teams had played, Real Madrid was the lone victor, moving Los Blancos into first place for the first time in over a season and a half.

Barcelona fell victim to the ever-growing "Anoeta Curse," as it failed to defeat Real Sociedad yet again in the Basque Country. Two second-half goals from Antoine Griezmann and David Zurutuza were the difference as La Real picked apart Barca's shambolic defense to earn a 3-1 win.

Things were even worse for Atléti, as it was chewed up and spit out by Osasuna at El Sadar. It was Osasuna's first win over one of the title contenders this season but the third time its taken points off one of them (it drew Barcelona and Real Madrid earlier in the season).

Meanwhile, Real Madrid had no problem with Elche and assumed the top spot in the table. Its unbeaten run in league play extended to 15 matches with the 3-0 win.

Athletic Bilbao retained its four-point cushion in fourth over Villarreal and La Real with a 2-0 win over Real Betis. The Yellow Submarine needed a late penalty miss from Espanyol to hold on for a 2-1 win on Monday.

Real Valladolid was the only team in the drop zone to claim points this round, earning a 1-1 draw on Friday against Levante. While Valladolid moved slightly further ahead of Rayo Vallecano and Real Betis, it was unable to make up ground on Málaga, who drew as well to stay three points clear of the drop.

Here’s a complete recap of the results from round 25 in Spain.

Real Valladolid 1-1 Levante
Real Madrid 3-0 Elche
Celta Vigo 1-1 Getafe
Real Sociedad 3-1 Barcelona
Almeria 0-0 Málaga
Rayo Vallecano 0-1 Sevilla FC
Real Betis 0-2 Athletic Bilbao
Valencia 2-1 Granada
Osasuna 3-0 Atlético Madrid
Espanyol 1-2 Villarreal
