Gabi hits a thunderbolt against Real Madrid

Holy heck.

Gonzalo Arroyo Moreno

Earlier in the day on Sunday, Yaya Toure produced a goal of the season candidate in the English League Cup final. Not to be outdone, Atletico Madrid's Gabi Fernandez more than bettered him with an absolutely spectacular strike. Off an indirect free kick in first half stoppage time, Gabi surged forward, then hit an absolute bullet into the back of the net from 30 yards.

Considering how this match started for Atletico Madrid, the halftime score is absolutely stunning. Karim Benzema had Madrid up early and the referee missed a clear penalty when Sergio Ramos fouled Diego Costa not long afterwards, but Atleti lead 2-1 at the break, thanks to this goal and an earlier strike by Koke.

In the third minute, when Benzema scored, it looked like the La Liga title race was all but over for Atleti. Just 45 minutes later, they’re right back in it and closing in on a famous win.
