Europa League scores: Tottenham fails in comeback bid while Basel collapse
Tottenham Hotspur came close to pulling off a surprise comeback against Benfica, but fell short. In Spain, Sevilla made up for their terrible first-leg performance, while Juventus won a battle of Italian sides.

AZ win 1-0 on aggregate, and now we get to stop pretending that Anzhi are still a thing. RIP Anzhi.
Valencia 1-0 Ludogorets
Since Valencia won the first leg of this tie 3-0 in Sofia, they were on cruise control on Thursday. Paco Alcacer scored this game’s only goal.
Viktoria Plzen 2-1 Olympique Lyonnais
This looks like a nice result ... except for the fact that Lyon won the first leg 4-1 and scored first in this game, so the result was never in doubt for them. Bafetimbi Gomis ended the tie with his goal just before the end of the first half, rendering Plzen’s two second-half goals meaningless.
Benfica 2-2 Tottenham Hotspur
This tie appeared to be over before this match started, but it was strangely in doubt for a period of about 15 minutes. Benfica struck first to take a 4-1 aggregate lead, then both teams proceeded to do nothing until the 71st minute, when Spurs made some subs. Nacer Chadli scored twice to get Spurs within one, setting up a wild finish, but Benfica held on. With the last move of the game, Lima drew a foul in the box on Sandro and converted the resulting penalty.
Fiorentina 0-1 Juventus
The Bianconeri came into this game needing an away goal after a 1-1 draw in the first leg, and it took quite a bit for them to get it. The Viola were in the match until the 70th minute, when Gonzalo Rodriguez was sent off, picking up a second yellow card for a trip on Fernando Llorente. Andrea Pirlo scored on the resulting free kick, sending Juventus through.
Napoli 2-2 FC Porto
Goran Pandev struck first in this match, leveling up the tie at 1-1 on aggregate, but Porto scored twice in the second half to seal a quarterfinal place. Nabil Ghilas finished off a through ball by Fernando to give Porto a crucial away goal before Ricardo Quaresma scored a second to put the tie away for good. Duvan Zapata came off the bench and scored late for Napoli, but it was of no consequence.
RB Salzburg 1-2 FC Basel
Basel had a man sent off in the 9th minute and Salzburg scored first, which should have led to a comfortable victory for the Austrians. But a bizarre second half saw them miss numerous chances and fail to deal with the physicality of their visitors. Marco Streller stunned the home crowd with a headed goal off a corner in the 50th minute and Gaston Sauro put Salzburg in a bigger hole 10 minutes later. Ultimately, they never recovered and eventually had a man of their own -- Alan -- sent off as well.
Betis 0-2 Sevilla (Sevilla wins on penalties)
Real Betis won the first leg of this tie 2-0 away to Sevilla, but their rivals matched their result. After a scoreless extra time period, Sevilla won a penalty shootout, with Betis missing their last two attempts.
