The referee has become a story in El Clásico, making two massive penalty decisions in a matter of 10 minutes. First, he granted Real Madrid a penalty when Cristiano Ronaldo was fouled outside the box by Dani Alves. Not long later, he pointed to the spot for Barcelona, sending Sergio Ramos off in the process for denying Neymar a clear goal-scoring opportunity.
Sergio Ramos sent off, Lionel Messi equalizes from the spot
While the granting of the penalty certainly isn’t in dispute in this situation, the showing of a red card to Sergio Ramos is. It’s not necessarily a bad call, but Madridistas will be questioning whether or not Neymar was truly in position to score a goal, and if a yellow card would have sufficed for Ramos’ infraction.
As expected, Lionel Messi was the man who stepped up to take the penalty and he had no problem hitting the back of the net.
