England vs. Denmark: Final score 1-0, Daniel Sturridge the lone scorer

England were boring again. Then they scored a goal. Yay England!

Richard Heathcote

If you've seen one England game under Roy Hodgson, you've seen them all. The Three Lions were better than Denmark on Wednesday, but created next to nothing. Eventually, they found a chance through the individual brilliance of a couple of very in-form players, finished it, and that was that. The match ended 1-0 and everyone shrugged their shoulders.

Denmark, who are almost always a compact counter-attacking team when playing good opposition, were even less ambitious than usual without Christian Eriksen in the team. Because England are England, they found that tough to deal with. They had most of the possession and never looked threatened, but created next to nothing in the first half.

As the second half wore on, England got progressively better as the Danes appeared to tire a bit. The big turning point for the hosts came in the 59th minute, when Adam Lallana replaced the seemingly exhausted and potentially hurt Jack Wilshere. He provided a serious spark and instantly became the team’s biggest creative outlet.

Lallana set up the game’s only goal in the 82nd minute, finding the head of Daniel Sturridge. From the left flank, he chipped a ball to the back post, and Sturridge was waiting to nod it into the back of the net, giving England the win.

England: Hart, Cole (Shaw 46’), Cahill, Smalling, Johnson, Gerrard, Henderson (Oxlade-Chamberlain 77’), Wilshere (Lallana 59’), Sterling (Townsend 86’), Rooney (Welbeck 60’), Sturridge (Milner 88’)

Goals: Sturridge (82’)

Denmark: Schmeichel, Jacobsen (Kristensen 46’), Agger, Kjaer (Bjelland 62’), Ankersen, Sloth (Zimling 62’), Kvist, Poulsen (Olsen 81’), Larsen (Kusk 46’), Krohn-Dehli, Bendtner

Goals: None
