With much of the world playing friendly matches on Wednesday, it was an excellent opportunity for Brazil to show off not just one but both of their new Nike kits ahead of the World Cup. Playing in Johannesburg in a match against South Africa, the Brazilians started off playing in their wonderfully-understated yellow home kits. The away side went into the half up 2-0 thanks to a sumptuous pair of goals from Oscar and Neymar, knowing that they’d look completely different -- in more ways than one -- for the second half.

After the break, the Brazilians emerged from the locker room with a new blue, subtly-hooped shirt. The color is a traditional for the Seleção but the tonal change that makes up the hoops is new territory for them. The stripes are made up of a subtle halftone using circles and diamonds (from the country’s flag) to create the effect. The change from color to color is a fluid one, echoing Brazil’s style of play.
In the official press release, Nike say that the “designers drew inspiration for the away kit from the energy and movement Brasilian people bring to sport, dance and life.” The kit’s overall design screams Brazil with the blue color reminiscent of the ocean and the beauty of the country’s coastlines.
Nike worked with Brazilian Designer Bruno Big to create the graphic for the pennant tab on the inside of the back of the collar. The graphic portrays the “Southern Cross,” a constellation of stars that were over Rio de Janeiro when the republic was born. The same constellation is found on the Brazilian flag.
The shirt will be paired with white shorts that have blue accents running down both the sides with blue socks to complete the look. Like the rest of Nike’s offerings for the World Cup, there has been extra effort put into the cooling technology in the shirt. The sides feature laser-cut openings to create ventilation and the back of the shirt is made of engineered mesh for breathability.
