The UEFA Champions League is down to its semifinal stage, with Atlético Madrid, Real Madrid, Chelsea and defending champions Bayern Munich having survived. Unlike earlier editions of the draw, there were minimal theatrics in Nyon, since only four teams remain in the competition. UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino seems to feel confident in his abilities to draw four balls without help from more than one former footballer.
This season’s quarterfinals were some of the most exciting in the history of the tournament, with all of the ties in doubt deep into the second legs. Madrid barely held on to a big lead first leg against Dortmund, nearly throwing away a 3-0 advantage, while Chelsea pulled off a comeback after a first leg loss against Paris Saint-Germain. Bayern and Atléti both drew 1-1 away from home in the first legs of their ties, then won the second legs at home.
