La Liga, Round 33 review: Atlético Madrid stay in first, relegation battle unchanged

Atlético Madrid kept on winning, while Barcelona suffered their fifth loss of the season. At the bottom of the league, there were no changes in the race to avoid relegation.

In terms of change within the league table, round 33 was fairly quiet. The title race changed just a bit, and two teams in the mid-table switched spots, but beyond that, everyone held their position as the scheduled move one week closer to the season finale.

Granada made the most noise of any team this weekend, defeating Barcelona 1-0. It's a brutal loss for Barca who drop down to third place, four points behind Atlético Madrid who remained in first thanks to their 2-0 win over Getafe. The loss by Barcelona isn't a death knell for their title hopes, but they aren't playing like a team capable of avoiding at least one more bad loss this season. Real Madrid took advantage of Barca's loss and re-took second place.

Athletic Bilbao kept their firm grip on fourth place thanks to a 3-0 win over Málaga on Monday. Sevilla, Athletic's closest competitor for the spot, won as well, but appear stuck six points behind in the race of the final Champions League place.

The relegation battle remained close, but unchanged as all three teams in the drop zone -- Getafe, Almeria, and Real Betis -- lost their matches. Osasuna and Real Valladolid were more than happy to take advantage of that, playing to a scoreless draw that allowed each of them to pick up a point and move just a little bit closer to potential safety.
