Cruz Azul vs. Toluca, 2014 CONCACAF Champions League final: Preview, TV schedule and how to watch online

Mexico’s two top teams have 180 minutes to earn the title of CONCACAF’s best.

Ed Szczepanski-USA TODAY Sports

Once again, the winner of the CONCACAF Champions League will come from Liga MX, making it six out of six for the league in the region’s championship tournament. But will it be Cruz Azul or Toluca who hoists the trophy?

It will be one of Mexico's two best teams.

Cruz Azul tops the Clausura table and Toluca are in second, making this a true clash of the region’s best teams. And if recent history means anything, this one is Cruz Azul’s to lose.

The first leg should certainly go to Cruz Azul, who have only lost once at home this season and haven’t lost to Toluca at Estadio Azul since 2009. That includes a 1-0 win over Toluca on March 1, when Christian Gimenez delivered an 80th minute winner. But Cruz Azul has been excellent against Toluca even away from Mexico City, losing just once in the last five years to Diablos Rojas.

Cruz Azul had a relatively easy path to the semifinals. While Club Tijuana gave them a bit of a scare in the first leg of their tie, things always looked likely to go Cruz Azul’s way and eventually, they did. Cruz Azul won 2-0 in the second leg and booked their spot in the final, where Toluca awaits them.

Amazingly, the only team that gave Toluca trouble on the way to the final was the San Jose Earthquakes. It took penalties for Diablos Rojas to get past the Quakes, but they did to advance to the semifinals, where they rolled past Alajuelense.

We’ve known for nearly a year now that Monterrey would not win a fourth consecutive Champions League. The Rayados didn’t qualify for the tournament, leaving the title up for grabs. Now it’s down to two contenders and, fittingly in a tournament dominated by Mexico, it’s the country’s two top clubs that remain.

Match date/time: Tuesday, 8 p.m. ET

Venue: Estadio Azul, Mexico City, Mexico

TV: Fox Sports 2 (U.S. English), Univision (U.S. Spanish), Fox Sports (Mexico)
