Bundesliga, Week 32 preview: Wolfsburg may jump into the Champions League

With the Bundesliga down to it’s final three matchdays, Wolfsburg can smell the Champions League.

While there will likely be better matches in Matchday 32 of the Bundesliga than Wolfsburg hosting Freiburg, that particular match could be the contest that sees Die Wölfe roar their way back into Europe’s most prestigious cup competition.

If the expected result happens in the Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen match occurs (BVB will win this match.), Wolfsburg will leapfrog their corporate-backed buddies and grasp the fourth Champions League position with a win at home against Freiburg. With Stuttgart and Borussia Mönchengladbach on the schedule in their final two matches, Wolfsburg can position themselves perfectly coming into the final stretch. Sure, they may be a year or two ahead of schedule in their rebuilding process, but Dieter Hecking has instilled the belief in the squad that they can do it now.

Die Wölfe have only lost twice in their last eight matches, and those losses came against Bayern Munich and away to Borussia Dortmund. Plus, Freiburg have almost assuredly secured their survival in the top flight for another season, barring a perfect run in the final three matches from lowly Hamburg. They may be just ripe enough for the picking.

Elsewhere, the three clubs in the thick of the relegation scrap all have winnable matches this weekend. Hamburg, Nürnberg, and Eintracht Braunschweig are all on the road against Augsburg, Mainz, and Hertha Berlin respectively. Of the three, it is most likely that bottom-of-the-table Braunschweig walk out of Berlin with a victory. Die Löwen have kept their wits about them through a difficult season and look like they'll be fighting tooth and nail until the final whistle of the 2013-2014 season blows.
