Fernando Torres isn't celebrating, but surely he's thrilled inside. The much maligned Chelsea striker has put his side ahead 1-0 on Atlético Madrid -- his boyhood club -- breaking a long deadlock. And thanks to this goal, there can no longer be extra time in this Champions League tie.
Fernando Torres scores to put Chelsea head of Atlético Madrid
For the first time in a very long time, Torres was in the right spot at the right time and applied a composed finish in a huge game.
The real work here came on the assist before the assist, from Willian. His off the ball movement was excellent, as was Cesar Azpilicueta’s follow-up run in support of him and his cross. All around, this was a gorgeous move by Chelsea.
But, as big as this goal was, it’s not job done for the Blues. Just one goal by Atlético Madrid will put the leaders of La Liga back ahead in this tie, on away goals.
