Jay Rodriguez has torn ACL

Not only will the Southampton striker miss the World Cup, he won’t be ready for the start of next season.

Clive Rose

Southampton forward Jay Rodriguez has torn his ACL, and his timing couldn't be any worse. Roy Hodgson was in the stands for Southampton's match against Manchester City, watching the potential World Cup squad member, but he won't be available for England this summer.

Rodriguez sustained the injury of the first half of Saturday’s match during a non-contact incident. He jumped and stretched to control a ball in the air, then came down badly on his leg and was taken directly to a hospital after he was substituted off.

Southampton are not in a relegation or European fight, so Rodriguez’s absence won’t affect them much this season, but it could hurt heading into their next campaign. Assuming Rodriguez doesn’t pull off a superhuman recovery, he’s likely to miss significant time at the beginning of next season.
