Ryan Giggs announces retirement

After 15 seasons with the first team of Manchester United, the legendary Ryan Giggs has finally announced his retirement, and will become Louis van Gaal’s assistant.

After playing 963 games for Manchester United, Ryan Giggs has finally announced his retirement. He's flirted with stepping away from playing on multiple occasions, going on to sign contract extensions in the spring over and over again, but he's finally decided to walk away.

The 40-year-old took over as interim player-manager after David Moyes was fired and substituted himself on for Manchester United's final game of the season at Old Trafford, allowing himself to take a bit of a career victory lap.

Because Giggs was relatively successful in his short period as interim United boss, there was some speculation that he would opt to take a managerial role at a lower-tier Premier League club or a Championship side for next season. Instead, he’s chosen to stick around at Old Trafford and will become new boss Louis van Gaal’s assistant manager. Given van Gaal’s age -- 62 -- most assume that the United brass would like him to groom Giggs to take over the job three years or so down the line.

Giggs retires with 180 professional goals, between United and Wales. He was named in the PFA team of the year six times and won the player of the year once. He won the Premier League 13 times with United, and also captured four FA Cups, four league cups, and the European Cup two times.
