Well, of course it would be like this. Fresh off being unceremoniously cut from the United States World Cup team, Landon Donovan finally scored his 135th career goal to break the MLS all-time scoring record. Donovan had been sharing the record with Jeff Cunningham since October.

The record-breaker was probably among the easiest goals he had ever scored. Robbie Keane did most of the hard work, breaking in on the right wing and putting Donovan at the back post for an easy finish into an open net to give the LA Galaxy a 2-0 lead over the Philadelphia Union in the 49th minute on Sunday.
Upon scoring, Donovan celebrated as if a huge weight had been lifted off his shoulders. It has been a rough few months for Donovan, looking mostly out of sorts during a seven-game scoreless drought to open the season. Including the final two games of the 2013 season, Donovan had not scored in nine matches. It was his longest scoring drought since at least 2010. But the real gut punch had come on Friday when Donovan was at least temporarily denied the opportunity to appear in his fourth straight World Cup after being one of the seven players cut by Jurgen Klinsmann.
