Sunderland have announced that head coach Gus Poyet has agreed to a contract extension that will keep the Uruguayan manager at the Stadium of light until 2016. There had been some concern that Poyet might leave during the summer despite leading the Black Cats to a late season surge that helped them avoid relegation.

After escaping relegation with a late season surge, Gus Poyet and Sunderland have agreed on a new contract.

The club released the announcement on the club’s website.
Poyet spoke after signing his new deal, expressing his pleasure with the new deal and being able to lead Sunderland forward.
”Stability is absolutely key to long-term and sustained success for any football club, and this new contract gives both the club and me that stability going forward. Now it’s a different challenge for me and the club and I am relishing the next stage with Sunderland.
We achieved so much last season, working together - the club and the fans - and we took many good memories from the season. The prospect of creating more of those memories is one which excites me, and now I cannot wait for the next chapter in my career and the history of Sunderland AFC.”
Poyet took over at Sunderland in October of last year, and helped lead the Black Cats out of the relegation zone with last season victories over Chelsea and Manchester United. In addition, Sunderland made their first appearance in a cup final since 1992, and a league double over rivals Newcastle United.
