In light of Portugal's drubbing against Germany, the United States and Ghana will feel more confident about their chances of advancing from World Cup Group G. And if either can win (6 p.m., ESPN), they'll feel like favorites to join Germany in making the knockout stage.
Ghana has already announced their lineup, and it's a surprising one. They're switching from their regular 4-3-3 to a 4-4-2 formation and have omitted stars Kevin-Prince Boateng and Michael Essien. Jurgen Klinsmann has been more secretive about the USMNT lineup, but it would be surprising to see him deviate from the side that defeated Nigeria in their final pre-World Cup friendly.
For Love of Country
The United States and Ghana have met in the last two editions of the World Cup, with Ghana knocking the USMNT out of the competition on both occasions. For that reason, USA fans have come to see this as a bit of a rivalry, so Monday night’s game means a bit more than just three points in the World Cup.
