Argentina could be without one of their key players for the remainder of the World Cup. Striker Sergio Agüero sustained a thigh muscle injury in the albiceleste's 3-2 win over Nigeria on Wednesday, and according to Argentine newspaper Clarín, the tear is serious enough to force coach Alejandro Sabella into a rethink for their knockout stage matches.

If that does prove to be the case, it’s a big blow for Argentina. Though they haven’t looked at their sparkling best at the World Cup so far, Agüero is a fixture in their starting lineup. He’s undoubtedly one of the best strikers in world football at the moment, and offers a versatile attacking option thanks to his mobility in the final third.
According to Clarín, Sabella has a choice between Ezequiel Lavezzi and Rodrigo Palacio to replace Agüero, with the former probably the more likely. Unfortunately neither of those players are on Agüero’s level, so it’s just as well Lionel Messi has taken to winning matches single-handedly.
Argentina's round of 16 match isn't until next Tuesday, when they take on Switzerland in São Paulo.
