Costa Rica and Greece go to penalties: Live updates

Costa Rica and Greece created plenty of scoring chances -- more than anyone assumed either would -- but they could only score one goal apiece. And even after an extra 30 minutes of soccer, they haven't been able to separate themselves, and head to penalties tied up at 1-1.

Bryan Ruiz scored the opening goal for Costa Rica in the 52nd minute, but a red card by Oscar Duarte 14 minutes later put the Ticos at a disadvantage. Sokratis Papastathopoulos struck in stoppage time to level for the Greeks, forcing a much deserved extra time period.

Strangely, Costa Rica did not spend extra time bunkering in and playing for spot kicks. Instead, they played their normal game, just with one fewer player. This left them open to countless Greek counter-attacks -- and really, Greece should have scored more than once -- but a combination of poor finishing and brilliant goalkeeping by Keylor Navas kept the score locked at 1-1.

At the end of extra time, Greece manager Fernando Santos got into an argument with the referee. He was sent off, but looked to have time to give instructions to his assistants before heading off the pitch.

As a reminder, penalties are best of five, and completed when one team is no longer mathematically able to beat the other in five rounds of penalties. If the teams are tied after five rounds, they go to sudden death, where each team takes a penalty until one team scores and the other misses in the same round.

This page will update each time a penalty is taken. Refresh for updated results.
