World Cup 2014: TV schedule and kickoff time for Brazil vs. Netherlands

Brazil and the Netherlands have nothing to lose, so much like other 3rd place games, they’ll probably produce plenty of goals.

Update: Netherlands cruise to 3rd-place playoff win

The World Cup's 3rd place game is pretty meaningless, and Netherlands' coach Louis van Gaal has said as much. But it's a good opportunity for fringe players to put in a good performance before a new cycle starts, and in the case of Brazil, a chance at some kind of redemption.

This edition's participants are coming off two very different semifinal performances. The Netherlands held Argentina scoreless and lost in a penalty shootout, while Brazil suffered arguably the most embarrassing defeat in the competition's history, falling 7-1 to Brazil. The lone Selecao goal was scored late after Germany had scored their seven, and Die Mannschaft were 5-0 up inside the game's first 30 minutes.

There's been plenty of speculation that Brazil boss Luiz Felipe Scolari will be stepping down from his post after this game, though a bounce-back performance by his squad could improve his chances of remaining in the post. Van Gaal, meanwhile, has already agreed to manage Manchester United following this tournament and will quickly get to work on evaluating their fringe players before transfer season heats up.
