Netherlands vs. Costa Rica: Louis van Gaal picks bizarre lineup to face Ticos

Louis van Gaal has picked a very odd lineup to face Costa Rica, with an uncertain formation and an odd mix of personnel.

Update: Dutch secure a dramatic victory on penalties

Louis van Gaal has sent out the most bizarre lineup in the World Cup so far to face Costa Rica.

With the soon-to-be Manchester United manager insisting that Daley Blind would play as a left-back, it appears that he has moved to a 3-4-3 formation with Wesley Sneijder and Giorginio Wijnaldum as a midfield two, backed up by Blind and Dirk Kuyt as wing-backs. Nigel de Jong is unavailable, but this is a totally unexpected change.

It's possible that Van Gaal might've been lying - it's possible the lineup could also be a 4-3-3 with Blind in midfield and Bruno Martins Indi at left-back. Memphis Depay, Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben appear to be the front three, but even that isn't certain, as there's some suggestion Depay could be one of the wingbacks.

No such shenanigans from Costa Rica however, who have gone with their expected lineup.

Netherlands (3-4-3): Jasper Cillessen; Ron Vlaar, Stefan De Vrij, Bruno Martins Indi; Daley Blind, Wedley Sneijder, Giorginio Wijnaldum, Dirk Kuyt; Memphis Depay, Robin van Persie, Arjen Robben.

Costa Rica (5-3-2): Keylor Navas, Junior Diaz, Johnny Acosta; Giancarlo Gonzalez, Michael Umana, Cristian Gamboa; Yeltsin Tejada, Christian Bolanos, Celso Borges; Joel Campbell, Bryan Ruiz.
