Manchester United lost to MK Dons -- a made-up third division team in a made-up town -- 4-0 in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday. While it is the fourth most important competition that most teams take part in and the third most important that United play in -- they're not in Europe because they sucked last year -- it's still an actual competition that people generally care to win, and United played a fair number of senior players who regularly make their 18-man squad for real games.
Manchester United got demolished and Twitter loved it

Twitter’s reaction was wonderful, as it usually is when these types of thing happen.
I always said if we were shite I'd hope we were abysmally, wretchedly, apocalyptically so, rather than just mediocre. #ThankYouLouis
— Callum Hamilton (@Callum_TH) August 26, 2014 If I keep telling myself that Louis Van Gaal meant to throw this match so that he can focus on the league, it'll make me feel better, right?

— Maxi Rodriguez (@FutbolIntellect) August 26, 2014 This is like spying on a drunk guy unsuccessfully trying to fit his house key into the lock for 90 minutes. I can’t watch anymore.
— Will Parchman (@WillParchman) August 26, 2014 hey can we recall Afobe, or what
— The Beer Baron (@Brohan_Cruyff) August 26, 2014 That's Benik Afobe, the scorer of the third and fourth goals. He's on loan from Arsenal, and has bounced around on loan for years, struggling to figure out exactly what his level is. Apparently, he's good enough to beat up on United.
Might turn up at United tomorrow for trials
— Emmanuel Y Frimpong. (@IAMFRIMPONG26) August 26, 2014 Hahahaha
— Edin Džeko (@EdDzeko) August 26, 2014 Players weren’t shy about getting in on the fun either. The way United’s midfield has looked so far this season, Frimmers might actually have a shot at making the team.
At least we scored at stadium:mk last season...
— StevenageFC Official (@StevenageFC) August 26, 2014 The entire MK Dons squad cost £235,000 - Equivalent to less than a weeks wages for Wayne Rooney.
— The Soccer Life (@TheSCRLife) August 26, 2014 MK Dons lost at home TEN times in League One last season. Decent but not outstanding at their level. #MUFC
— Nigel Adderley (@nadderley) August 26, 2014 And finally, some context for how big of an upset this is. MK Dons don’t have much money and aren’t even that great for a team on their level. They’re an adequate third division side.
