Manchester City have confirmed midfielder Jack Rodwell has joined Sunderland in a permanent deal. The 23-year-old moved to the Etihad from Everton two years ago as one of England's hottest young prospects, though he failed to break into their first team under both Roberto Mancini and Manuel Pellegrini.

Manchester City have confirmed their midfielder Jack Rodwell has joined Sunderland in a permanent deal.

With City having beefed up their midfield over the last season with a number of other bigger signings, it became increasingly clear Rodwell was never going to establish himself as a regular at the Citizens. A move to a team at which he should get regular first team football is a wise decision. He’s still young enough to develop into a very capable player.
Rodwell becomes Sunderland's fifth signing of the summer, after the arrivals of Jordi Gómez, Billy Jones, Patrick van Aanholt and Rodwell's former Manchester City teammate Costel Pantilimon. The Black Cats are looking to strengthen their team ahead of the Premier League season, after they avoided relegation by the skin of their teeth a few months ago.
