League Cup scores: Arsenal lose, Liverpool survive 15 rounds of pens

Arsenal’s league cup campaign came to a quick end as they fell against Southampton. Liverpool are in extra time against Middlesbrough.

Arsenal suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Southampton despite taking a lead just 14 minutes into the match thanks to Alexis Sánchez. The Saints stormed back with a penalty scored by Dušan Tadić, and Nathaniel Clyne's shot from distance five minutes from the halftime break. Jack Wilshere was shown a red card in second half stoppage time to had insult to injury.

Stoke City defeated Sunderland 2-1, overcoming a rare Jozy Altidore goal thanks to a brace from Marc Muniesa, while Swansea thumped listless Everton 3-0, handing Toffees their second straight loss.

AFC Bournemouth hammered fellow Championship side Cardiff City 3-0, while fellow Championship team Norwich City were upset 1-0 by Shrewbury Town from League Two.

In the most exciting game of the day, Liverpool went into extra time with Middlesbrough, and eventually won on penalties. They took the lead in extra time, but conceded a 120th minute penalty, with Patrick Bamford converted to force a shootout. It went on for an incredible 15 rounds and featured made penalties by both keepers, but Liverpool eventually came out on top.
