It's the end of an era: Raul, arguably the greatest legend of a Real Madrid team that's got a long list of them, will retire in November.

Raul currently plays for the New York Cosmos in the North American Soccer League, where he signed in December after several years with Al Sadd and Schalke. He will always be remembered for his legendary days with Real Madrid, where he departed as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer -- a mark only recently passed by Cristiano Ronaldo -- and lead Los Merengues to three Champions League titles and six La Liga titles during his legendary career.

Now 38, Raul has decided that the time has come to call it a career.

When I signed for the New York Cosmos in December, I said I would evaluate how I felt towards the end of the year and assess whether I would continue to play.

My decision is to retire from playing at the end of this season. I am fully focused on finishing the season strong and helping the New York Cosmos win the NASL Championship. In the coming months I will decide the next step in my career.

Playing soccer has been part of my life for so long and the decision to retire is not an easy one but I believe it is the right time.

I'm thankful to everyone who has supported me throughout my career and I look forward to playing my final games with the New York Cosmos over the coming weeks.

Whatever comes next for Raul, we wish him the best. Watching him over the years was an incredible privilege, because he was one of the very, very best in the game. No matter who a player that special plays for, whether that’s a rival or no, you enjoy watching them do their thing. Raul was definitely one to enjoy, and we’ll miss him.
