Dick Advocaat saved Sunderland from relegation last season, leading a strong late-season surge to escape the drop yet again. Unfortunately, through their first eight Premier League matches this season, Sunderland were winless and straight back on track to fighting off relegation. Now the job of staying up falls on a man with plenty of experience in doing just that: Sam Allardyce.
Sunderland hire Sam Allardyce to rescue season
Sunderland are in trouble again, and now have a new manager hoping to save the day.

— Sunderland AFC (@SunderlandAFC) October 9, 2015 The former West Ham boss is a manager who has plenty of experience in making sure his teams stay up, even in the face of injury crises and tough opposition. Allardyce’s teams may not play the most exciting football around, but they’re also tough to beat and that’s a vital factor in a relegation battle.
Of course, Allardyce is only available because West Ham decided not to renew his contract when it expired at the end of last season, after several years of failing to live up to expectations. West Ham were regularly expected to rise higher in the Premier League, but never quite managed to under Allardyce.
But when it comes to avoiding relegation, Allardyce seems like about as good an option for Sunderland as there was available. From the quotes Sunderland released by him, he sounds ready to face this challenge. Sunderland fans will be hoping he’s up for the task, and we’ll see just how things are looking on October 17 when Sunderland take on West Brom in Big Sam’s first match in charge.
