Manchester United vs. CSKA Moscow: confirmed lineups

Ashley Young is starting in defense and Wayne Rooney is alone up top again for Manchester United.

The lineups are in for Manchester United’s match with CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford. They’re tied in their Champions League group on four points apiece, and both would love to have three more after today.

Manchester are trying to get them with a little bit of a patchwork defense, with Ashley Young filling in at right back. We saw him do well as a left wingback at times last season, but as a proper fullback on his weaker side? That’s going to be an adventure. Louis van Gaal is also persisting with Wayne Rooney up top as a lone striker with Anthony Martial shunted out to the left, despite plenty of evidence that that’s not working.

Time to see if things get any better for Manchester United. A fourth straight scoreless match wouldn’t be much fun for their fans.

Manchester United starting XI (4-2-3-1): David de Gea; Ashley Young, Chris Smalling, Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo; Bastian Schweinsteiger, Michael Carrick; Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, Anthony Martial; Wayne Rooney

CSKA Moscow starting XI (4-2-3-1): Igor Akinfeev; Mario Fernandes, Sergei Ignashevic, Alexei Berezutski, Georgi Schennikov; Pontus Wernbloom, Alan Dzagoev; Zorin Tosic, Bibras Natcho, Georgi Milanov; Ahmed Musa
