Whitecaps vs. Timbers 2015 live stream: Time, TV schedule and how to watch MLS playoffs online

Portland has the away goals advantage heading to Vancouver.

Godofredo Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

The Vancouver Whitecaps did well in the first leg of their conference semifinal tie, getting a draw away to the Portland Timbers. But Portland weren’t pushing too hard for a goal, instead using the away goals rule to their advantage. They’ll be thrilled to head to BC Place tied 0-0, knowing the tiebreaker is very much in their favor.

Starting Timbers goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey was surprisingly announced as out just before the game, due to an illness. Jake Gleeson stepped into the role on short notice and performed well, making three saves to preserve a shutout. But he was outshined by David Ousted, the Whitecaps keeper, who made several spectacular stops.

Both teams will be expecting to get more out of their center forwards in the second leg. Fanendo Adi and Octavio Rivero caused problems against the defenses they were facing, but didn’t generate much in the way of clear-cut chances for themselves.

Key player -- David Ousted

Vancouver’s midfield and defense are good enough that Ousted shouldn’t face constant pressure, but he’s still one of the most important players on the pitch for his team. Because the first leg finished 0-0, Portland will have a huge advantage if they score. Keeping a clean sheet for as long as possible is huge for Vancouver.

Key matchup -- Diego Valeri vs. Matías Laba

In the first leg, Laba won this battle. Valeri is Portland’s most important creative player, but Laba is one of MLS’s top DMs. It’ll be up to him to deny time and space to Valeri.
