Serie A league leaders Inter Milan will look to extend their gap at the top of the table with a win over mid-table Lazio at the San Siro on Sunday. Roberto Mancini’s side haven’t played the prettiest football so far this season, but a mixture of determined defending and good fortune has seen them emerged as the top flight’s early pacesetters. Heading into the round they’re four points clear of closest competitors Fiorentina, and head in on the back of an impressive 4-0 win over struggling Udinese.

Though Lazio would traditionally be expected to put up a strong fight against Inter, the Roman club have been seriously struggling so far this season. They’ve now only won one of their last nine league games, and the pressure is building on coach Stefano Pioli. They finished last season in an impressive third place, though their recent run of form has seen them slip down into the bottom half. If they fail to pick up at least a point in this game, it could be curtains for the Parma native.

Key factor: Will Lazio be able to score?

Lazio's big problem this season has been scoring goals. They've netted only 18 times in their first 16 matches, despite having conceded 25. Their defence hasn't been strong enough for them to have ground out narrow 1-0 victories, and the result has been that they've won only six league games so far. They'll have to improve significantly if they're going to find the net in this match, with Inter's early success having been built entirely on their solid foundations.

Recent history

Inter have had the edge in the last few meetings with Lazio, having recorded two wins and a draw in the last three meetings. However, Lazio had won four on the bounce prior to their upturn in form, with these sides having generally been pretty evenly matched over the last few seasons. This is arguably the first time in a while that there has been a clear favourite heading into this fixture.

Inter Milan injuries and suspensions

Out: Davide Santon (injured). In doubt: None.

Lazio injuries and suspensions

Out: Stefan de Vrij, Senad Lulić, Ricardo Kishna, Federico Marchetti, Santiago Gentiletti (injured). In doubt: Dušan Basta, Keita Baldé Diao.

Inter’s only absentee will be full-back Santon. Lazio have been rather less lucky on the injury front, and they’ll be without several first-team regulars. However, wing-back Basta and forward Keita could be involved if they pass late fitness tests.
