Bundesliga, Week 21: Goals, goals, goals, goals, goals...

High pressing, meet free-scoring. Leverkusen - Wolfsburg might be the Bundesliga in a nutshell.

This round sparks the big questions. Can Dortmund win two games in a row? Will HSV be able to trick Bayern into putting the ball into their own net, and if so, will they still concede five like they do each time they visit the Allianz Arena? Can Werder continue their great run against Augsburg, the run that’s turned them from relegation candidates to Europa League hopefuls?

And can Wolfsburg’s visit to Leverkusen really be as good as we’re all hoping?

(editor’s note: yes. yes it can be)

Dortmund vs Mainz

Watch: GOLTV USA;, ESPN UK ; Sky Bundesliga 1, Sky Go Deutchland (Germany)

Dortmund finally won last week! True, they remain just one point above dead last, but still -- it’s something! Did Jürgen Klopp find the winning formula, or was 3-0 victory a fluke? Considering they triumphed over fellow relegation-battlers, the win may not signify much. But between the three points and the excitement that was Marco Reus renewing his contract, we have to expect a little more enthusiasm than we’ve seen over the past few months. It may help that Mainz, too, are in a relegation battle, so the hosts may see them as easy prey. Then again, Mainz did give us that 5-0 win over Paderborn a couple weeks back..and it’s not as though Dortmund’s defense is all that better.

Leverkusen vs Wolfsburg

Watch: MyGermanTV + (USA), Sky Bundesliga 5, Sky Go Deutschland (Germany)

This is not just the most interesting game in Germany, but the most promising match in Europe this weekend. Which means, of course, that it’ll likely end in a goalless draw. Yes, Roger Schmidt’s football philosophy is somewhere between that of Klopp and Zdenek Zeman, with crazy pressing and lots of shots on goal. However, Leverkusen have a problem: their strikers can’t score. That’s not so much a problem with Wolfsburg, who thrilled the world when they slaughtered Bayern 4-1 to start the second half of the season. Sure, there’s still an eight-point gap between them and the Bavarians, but that doesn’t mean Wolfsburg are going to let their guard down.

Eintracht Frankfurt vs Schalke 04

Watch: GOLTV USA; BT Sport 2 (UK); Sky Bundesliga 1, Sky Go Deutschland (Germany)

Only Bayern and Wolfsburg scored more goals than Eintracht this season. There’s been an average of nearly three goals in each of their last six Bundesliga matches, and Eintracht have scored each time, yet they’ve not managed to win any of those. Eintracht have the joint-worst defense in the league, so between their aggression and their slips at the back, you know you’ll be entertained. The hosts may have a tougher time with disciplined, patient Schalke, who’d rather play out a goalless draw then record a loss. But if Eintracht finally manage to break their winless streak, they could have the honor of derailing Schalke’s hopes for a Champions League spot -- and send them into their midweek game with Real Madrid feeling even more helpless.
