Serie A schedule and preview, round 23: Embarrassment ensues

Napoli got thrashed by Palermo and Roma couldn’t score against Serie A’s worst side as week 23 in Italy has seen some embarrassed faces all around the league.

Can Juventus be stopped? Oh, they’re playing Cesena, never mind. Can Napoli win the Derby of two Sicilies and keep up with Roma? Can any game overshadow the spectacle that is Chievo vs. Sampdoria? Who is more stylish, Vincenzo Montella or Eusebio Di Francesco? How long will Milan and Inter compete at being awful? That, and so much more in the round 23, a round in which most favorites have relatively easy tasks.

Except Napoli. The partenopei kind of have to win at Palermo if they want to stay in the race for second place. If you look at last weekend’s results, you might think it’s not going to be that hard. After all, Palermo lost easily to an inconsistent Inter. But, Palermo at home and Palermo away are two completely different teams. At home, they unleash the full power of the Argentinian super-duo Franco Vazquez and Paulo Dybala, and rare are the teams that manage to avoid their wrath. They score a lot of goals, and do so in spectacular ways. Meanwhile, Napoli don’t have the most solid defense. You do the math. Which is not to say Napoli cannot outscore the rosanero. With attacking potential that at Rafa Benitez’s disposal, few opponents can avoid conceding a goal -- or three.

Milan vs. Empoli

You should watch this game because Milan are entertaining. Not in the way in which they’d like to be. But for those of you who like a good laugh, they’ll almost certainly amuse. The potential for total chaos is greater than in almost any other team in Europe. It’s hard to predict what it will go wrong -- a fight between their players, one of the highest earning and most experienced guys trying to strangle an opponent, or simply good old ridiculous defending by the former European champions. And if all else fails, Milan can simply take to Twitter, accusing lowly Empoli of manipulating offside calls.

Roma vs. Parma

Watch: beIN Sports USA, RAI International, beIN SPORTS CONNECT (USA and Canada); ESPN UK; Premium Calcio 3, SKY Go Italia, Sky Calcio 2

One team is (sort of) in the scudetto battle, the other dead last. One spent approximately 50 million on players this season, the other didn’t even pay theirs for six months. One is owned by a rich American consortium, the other was sold twice in the last month -- once for one-fifth of what Roma paid for Juan Iturbe, the second time for the same amount Iturbe’s sticker is worth. So we’re confident in calling a Parma win. It’s going to be fantastic. And you’ll be able to call out the haters who’d complained beforehand about what a dull game it was going to be.
