Köln fans launch bizarre pitch raid in Mönchengladbach

Fans of FC Köln upset over the club’s loss to rival Borussia Mönchengladbach rushed the pitch in fairly bizarre fashion.

While the focus of the Bundesliga for many fans Saturday was on the chaos of Wolfsburg's dramatic 5-4 win over Bayer Leverkusen or Bayern Munich's 8-0 demolition of HSV, there was one truly bizarre incident in the Rhineland when fans of visiting FC Köln got rather out of hand after losing 1-0 in injury time to rivals Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Köln's away fans had been rowdy all match long, as is fairly normal in one of Germany's bigger rivalries. But when Granit Xhaka headed home the winner for Gladbach, the Köln fans decided that they had seen enough and wanted to show Germany just how they felt about their club's loss.

Köln fans poured out of the stands in boilersuits and threw flares around before clashing with police on their way back to the terraces. It was a bizarre sight, with so many fans out on the pitch wearing the all-white, full-body suits, with the fact that so many fans had the coveralls in the first place suggesting that this had been planned well in advance.

Several fans, including the poor guy who found himself on the wrong end of a police baton in the video above, were detained after the pitch invasion, but most reportedly made it back to the stands and out of the stadium unscathed. One has to wonder if the police in the stadium will face questions over how slow their response was, given how long it would have taken the Köln fans to reach the pitch in the first place, much less spend a couple of minutes frolicking about before being run off.
