AC Milan unveil plans for new stadium

AC Milan have long talked about getting out of the San Siro and into a stadium of their own. Now they know what kind of stadium they hope to leave for.

The club released the first renderings of a 48,000 seat stadium they are hoping to build in the Portello area of the city. The 18-time Italian champions and seven-time champions of Europe are hoping to move into the ground by the start of the 2018-19 season.

Most teams in Italy do not own their own stadiums. In addition, many of the stadiums in the country are old and lack the luxury seating, amenities and other things that have become the norm in top-flight football. As a result, their revenues don’t match up with some of the other teams in Europe.

Juventus broke the Italian trend in 2011 when they opened up their brand new stadium, which they own. Now AC Milan are hoping to do the same and get out of the old and way-too-big San Siro, which they share with Inter Milan.
