Bundesliga, Week 20 results: Dortmund finally win

Is the Bundesliga title race still be open? Can Wolfsburg make it interesting? It seems almost impossible, but if Bayern fails to win their third straight game, we might see something resembling a real chase. Plus, the scramble to avoid the drop is getting ever more frenetic, and it’s likely the race for the European places will last until the final week.

When Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting failed to convert a penalty, Schalke missed the chance to beat Bayern midweek. That means the königsblauen are now fifth, but only two points behind their third-placed opposition. Gladbach are suddenly flying high, edging two 1-0 wins to start out the second half of the season. We’re not going to lie -- putting Roberto Di Matteo’s disciplined approach up against Gladbach’s counter, and add to that the lack of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who’s out on a four-game suspension, this match probably won’t be as high-scoring as many Bundesliga games. But with so much riding on it, there’s still plenty of reason to tune in.

At this point, Dortmund are the opposite of fun -- well, if you’re a fan of the team, anyway. But even those giggling at BVB’s struggles earlier in the season are now starting to wonder when this club are going to get back on their feet. With a draw and a loss over the past week, Dortmund are officially alone at the bottom of the table, meaning their big games are now against fellow relegation battlers. Like Freiburg. Only Freiburg has won fewer games than Dortmund this season. Problem is, the hosts started off the second half with a 4-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt, whereas BVB still aren’t converting their chances, and have failed to score in 2015. Really, this match looks like it’s Freiburg’s to lose.

Potentially the best game of the week, what with both sides’ love of attacking football, and Hoffenheim’s deep distrust of defending. Hoffenheim have already conceded five in 2015, but they’ve only scored two -- have they lost their touch, or are they saving it all up to smash five past the Wolves? Probably not. Wolfsburg may have only been able to draw with Eintracht midweek, but there’s no denying that this is an immensely talented squad. Kevin De Bruyne is the hottest thing in the Bundesliga right now, pulling every string for his side; Bas Dost is suddenly on fire, and now they’ve added André Schürrle to the mix. Add to that the fact that Hoffenheim somehow almost manage to find a way to make even a loss entertaining, and this game is definitely the pick of the week.
