Sunderland have sacked manager Gus Poyet after the Black Cats succumbed to a shock 4-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa on the weekend. That defeat left them just a point above the relegation zone, with the club having won only one Premier League match this year.

The Uruguayan leaves the club a point clear of the relegation zone.

“Sadly, we have not made the progress that any of us had hoped for this season and we find ourselves battling, once again, at the wrong end of the table,” said club chairman Ellis Short. “We have therefore made the difficult decision that a change is needed.”
Poyet’s sacking comes as no real surprise, with Sunderland showing no real improvement since Poyet took over from Paolo Di Canio midway through last season. The Uruguayan managed to steer the club to a miraculous relegation survival, though he has failed to build upon that success and the club continue to struggle near the foot of the table.
The early favourite to replace Poyet is Dutch veteran Dick Advocaat, who has over 30 years of experience of football management. In that time he’s coached the Dutch national team twice, and won top division titles in the Netherlands, Scotland and Russia. If he is hired, his experience could come in very handy.
