Liverpool unveil next season’s New Balance home kits

As Liverpool move on to a rebranded kit, New Balance’s first entry is ... interesting.

We’ve reached that time of the year when new kit unveilings start coming fast, as fans eagerly await to see what their teams will be wearing come next season. Will there be a collar? Will the colors be right? Will there be some hideous pattern, or will it be boringly plain? This is when we learn the answers to those questions after months of conflicting leaks.

One of the more anticipated entries this year is the new set of Liverpool kits. The English club made waves three years ago when they signed a then-record deal to have their uniforms made by American company Warrior, who were making their first entry into making gear in the sport, after establishing themselves as one of the major supplies of Lacrosse uniforms and equipment in the U.S. After three years of strange away kits and PR nightmares, Warrior's parent company New Balance is taking over the contract, hoping to improve their image.

And so, we come to their first shirt with a Liverpool crest on it with the release of the home kit, and it’s a lot better than rumored versions.

This is quite a bit more clean and simple than the “leaks” that were circulating over the last couple of weeks. There’s a bit of a pattern to the shirt, but not the loud checkers that were rumored, and a 90s-style collar is gone too.

The shirt also continues the use of the more simplified Liver Bird crest that has featured on Liverpool’s shirt ever since Warrior took over, rather than the full club crest that includes part of the Shankly gates, and the two flames meant to honor the victims and survivors of the Hillsborough disaster. Their absence has never sat well with much of the Liverpool fan base, though the flames at least have mostly been moved to the back of the shirt, a compromise that appeases some, though not all.

The kit will be available for purchase on May 14. The away and third kits will be unveiled over the coming weeks, so we’ll see if the leaks that they are white and a striped black pattern, respectively, will hold as true as the leaks for the home kit did.
