Borussia Dortmund appoint Thomas Tuchel to replace Jürgen Klopp

For the second time in his career, Thomas Tuchel will take over a club after Jürgen Klopp's departure. When Klopp left Mainz because he'd taken them as far as he could, Tuchel was brought in a year later. This time, Tuchel takes over for Klopp at Borussia Dortmund.

Klopp announced his departure earlier in the week, with Dortmund confirming Klopp would be released from his contract at the end of the season. Dortmund have been eliminated from Champions League contention in a season where they were expected to finish in the top four comfortably.

Tuchel left Mainz for personal reasons at the start of this season and proceeded to take this year off from coaching. He reportedly accepted a position at Hamburg last week, but ultimately opted not to take the wall, apparently sensing that a better job would become available shortly.

At Mainz, Tuchel guided the team to the UEFA Europa League for the first time in their history. The club managed to hold off approaches from Schalke 04 and Bayer Leverkusen for his managerial services, though his resignation from his post meant they didn't keep him long.

Like Klopp, Tuchel is known to favor a high-tempo counter-pressing game built on quick counter attacks, and usually in the same 4-2-3-1 formation. This makes him a natural replacement for Klopp, but with the change being made because Klopp could no longer get the most out of his players, one has to wonder if a near like-for-like coaching change is what Dortmund really needs.
