Inter Milan vs. AC Milan 2015: Final score 0-0 in a putrid match

Do you remember when Inter Milan and AC Milan were two of the best sides in Europe? Do you remember Javier Zanetti? Paolo Mandini? Ronaldo? Ricky Kaka?

This is all a distant memory. The current iterations of Milan and Inter relate to those teams in name, crest and shirt only. They drew 0-0 in Sunday’s Milan Derby, and no other result could have been any more perfect. Milan and Inter entered this match in 9th and 10th place in Serie A, respectively, and exit in the same positions. Forget Juventus -- these teams aren’t in Sampdoria’s league.

While Inter displayed something resembling ambition and ability to attack, Milan did no such thing. For that reason, Inter should be spared some insults. They had some shots blocked and forced Diego Lopez to make at least one decent save. Milan, on the other had, had a 40-minute spell without an attack.

There were two plays in the second half that summarized this match perfectly. The first came in the 72nd minute, when Philippe Mexes bundled the ball into his own goal, but it was wiped off the board because of a Rodrigo Palacio foul. If this match had deserved any kind of goal, it would have been a Mexes own goal, but let’s be honest -- it didn’t deserve a goal at all. The second came in the 88th minute when Jeremy Menez hit Nemanja Vidic in the testicles.

While he appeared to be in considerable discomfort, Vidic probably came to appreciate the reminder that he is, in fact, alive. Viewers could have used a similar reminder, but it never came.
