Bayern Munich win 2014-15 Bundesliga title

Sunday’s 1-0 win for Borussia Mönchengladbach over Wolfsburg locked it up in April.

For the third season in a row, Bayern Munich have won the Bundesliga title with multiple weeks to spare. The Bavarians pulled off a 1-0 win over Hertha Berlin on Saturday, then clinched the championship when second-placed Wolfsburg lost 1-0 to Borussia Mönchengladbach on Sunday. Bayern lead by 15 points with four matches to play.

As impressive as their Bundesliga performance has been, Bayern will come up short of their last two seasons. They set a Bundesliga record with 91 points in the 2012-13 season, then nearly matched it with 90 points last season. If they win the rest of their games, they will finish this season with 88 points.

Bayern have the second- and third-leading scorers in the league, Arjen Robben and Robert Lewandowski, who have 17 and 16 goals respectively. Leading scorer Alexander Meier has 19 goals and is out for the season, so it’s fairly likely that a Bayern player also snatches the golden boot. The team has 77 goals, currently 14 more than the next-best team. Their plus-64 goal differential is twice as good as Wolfsburg’s.

The Bavarians close their season with matches against Bayer Leverkusen, Augsburg, Freiburg and Mainz. They’re also still alive in the DFB-Pokal and Champions League, and could complete the second treble in their history.
