NWSL Week 6 in review: Stolen points

And then there was one. Heading into Week 6, there were two unbeaten teams remaining, Portland and Chicago. One of them managed to remain that way thanks to a second half comeback, while the other was this close before letting one by in stoppage time.

FC Kansas City and Western NY kicked off the week’s action on Thursday night, and while neither managed to score a goal, the two teams did combine for seven yellow cards -- four for the Flash and three for FCKC.

Chicago makes a comeback to stay unbeaten
The Red Stars came into Week 6 at the top of the table and as one of two remaining unbeaten teams. The one-win Houston Dash should have been no problem. Should have been. Except by the 59th minute, the Dash had a 2-0 lead thanks to a converted penalty from Rachael Axon and a goal from Kealia Ohai, and the mighty Red Stars looked headed for their first visit to the loss column.

Enter Sofia Huerta. The Chicago rookie opened her account with a two-goal, Player of the Week winning performance last weekend against Boston, and apparently had a little something left for the Dash. Huerta scored in the 60th and 81st minutes to salvage the draw for Chicago and keep the Red Stars unbeaten atop the table.

Boston steals one in stoppage
Give the Breakers credit. Boston, again mired in some battle for the bottom of the table, facing off against a Portland team they’d been run over by, to the tune of 4-1, on opening weekend. But the Breakers didn’t just hang with the Thorns; Boston limited the impact of Genoveva Anonma in her debut, frustrated Allie Long and outshot the visitors 11-5. A draw and a point against one of the league’s top teams would have been a nice thing after all that, but Kristie Mewis had other ideas. After several attempts that sailed wide, Mewis finally got centered in stoppage time, lofting a shot over an off-her-line Michelle Betos and in for the game’s only goal and Boston’s second win of the season. For some perspective: The Breakers now have the same amount of wins as the Seattle Reign. 2015 is so weird.

Washington also steals one in stoppage
Francisca Ordega scored in stoppage to give the Spirit the 1-0 win. Or so they say, and we just have to take their word for it since no one could see it. Washington jumped into second with this supposed win, while lead balloon Sky Blue FC is now in 8th and still hasn’t won since opening weekend.
