Jozy Altidore out for upcoming USMNT matches

The Toronto FC striker is expected to miss at least a month.

Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

Toronto FC announced on Tuesday that Jozy Altidore will miss 4-5 weeks with a hamstring injury, which means he'll be out for both of the United States men's national team's upcoming June friendly matches. Altidore has five goals this season, tied for seventh in MLS. Toronto currently sits in sixth place in the East.

The good news for the USMNT is that Altidore should be fit in time for the Gold Cup. But that's not exactly great news for TFC, who are going to be without Altidore for a month, then get him back for one game or so before he joins national team camp. He's going to miss a lot of games for a team that looks likely to be on the edge of the playoffs. Robbie Findley and Luke Moore are respectable backups, but certainly not terrific options.

Jurgen Klinsmann has much better replacement options for Altidore at the moment than he did a couple of months ago. Aron Jóhannsson and Juan Agudelo are both fit and in form again, Jordan Morris looks like a viable senior team option, and some fringe players like Chris Wondolowski, Charlie Davies and Will Bruin are playing very well in MLS at the moment. There might be a significant dropoff from Altidore, but enough American strikers are playing well at the moment that it could be nonexistent.

The USMNT plays the Netherlands on June 5 in Amsterdam and Germany on June 10 in Cologne. They have one more Gold Cup warmup match against Guatemala on July 3 before the tournament gets underway on July 7.
