Heading into the U-20 World Cup, Mexico were outsiders to win the entire thing. However, a surprising defeat to Mali in their first game has left El Tri on the brink of an embarrassingly early exit. That has put them under enormous pressure heading into Wednesday’s match against a tough Uruguay team that opened its tournament with a 1-0 victory over Serbia.

Mexico can’t afford another defeat after losing their opening match to Mali.

Making things even harder for Mexico will be the absences of two players who were sent off in that opening day defeat to Mali: Atlético Madrid striker Diego Gama, and Santos Laguna centre-back Oscar Bernal. They’ll have to hope that their forced reshuffle doesn’t disrupt their organization too much, but it could well heap pressure on their star attacker Hirving Lozano to produce a match-winning moment of brilliance.
Uruguay attacker Gastón Pereira, who has already established himself as a regular at domestic giant Nacional at just 19 years old, scored the only goal in their win over Serbia, and ominously finished as the second-top scorer to Argentina's Giovanni Simeone at the Sudamericano Sub-20 tournament held in Uruguay earlier this year. West Ham United midfielder Diego Poyet may well once again have to settle for a place on the bench.
