Germany vs. Sweden, 2015 World Cup: Time, TV schedule and live stream

The WWC knockout stages get underway on Saturday with Germany taking on Sweden.

Bruce Fedyck-USA TODAY Sports

Saturday sees the 2015 Women’s World Cup knockout stages kick off. The wheat has been separated from the chaff, and from here on in, we’ll hopefully get nothing but closely-fought action between some of the world’s best teams. That’s certainly what we’re anticipating in the opening match between Germany and Sweden, who both headed to Canada before the tournament with ambitions of making a run all the way.

Germany are ranked as the best team in the game at the moment, and will be looking to make it three World Cup wins in the last four editions -- they won in both 2003 and 2007, only to be eliminated in the quarterfinal stage on home soil four years ago. In the group stages they thrashed the Ivory Coast and Thailand either side of a draw against Norway, and come into this match as favourites.

But, if history’s anything to go by, Sweden are not to be taken lightly. They’ve never won the World Cup, but finished third in the last edition, and runners-up in the United States eight years prior. However, if they’re to deliver on their promise in Canada, they’re going to have to improve on their group stage form -- they’ve drawn all three of their matches so far, and scraped into the knockout stages as one of the best third-placed finishers.
