It’s a jam-packed summer for Mexico, who are sending solid squads to two tournaments. In the past, El Tri has sent an Under-23 team to the Copa America, but they’ve brought a lot of very good senior players to South America this time around. They’ll play a couple of friendlies in preparation for the tournament, the first coming against Peru on Wednesday.

El Tri’s busy summer gets underway on Wednesday.

The team is headlined by Rafael Marquez, who is somehow yet to retire. The 36-year-old played regularly enough for Hellas Verona this season for Miguel Herrera to pick him as the veteran leader for a team with a bit less experience. The rest of the defense is older as well, with 21-year-old Carlos Salcedo the only youngster in the team at the back. Most of the team’s top young talent is at the Under-20 World Cup, though 22-year-old “Tecatito” Jesus Corona is an exciting prospect.
Despite being a key player for Mexico in recent years, Raúl Jiménez will lead the line on this team, implying that he'll be left out for the Gold Cup. The 24-year-old struggled at Atlético Madrid and looks likely to leave them after one season.
Peru aren’t expected to make much noise in Copa America, but could give Mexico some problems. They’re a very experienced team, with 36-year-old Claudio Pizarro still getting games up top.
