The United States kick off their 2015 World Cup campaign against Australia Monday and will no doubt be gunning for victory. Jill Ellis’ side have headed to Canada as one of the tournament favorites, and three early points would be the best way for them to settle their nerves and signal their intent.

The USWNT will be hoping to avoid a slip-up against dark horses Australia in their World Cup opener.
However, the Socceroos will be out to spoil the party, and they’ve certainly got an outside chance of doing so. They have plenty of players with major tournament experience, and will be looking to get through the group for the third consecutive World Cup. Australia will be looking for a big performance from Lisa De Vanna in particular, with the co-captain seeking to add to her 35 international goals on what will be the 100th appearance for her country.
The United States can calm themselves with a quick glance at the history books: they’ve never lost to Australia, and have beaten them three times in the last three years, winning by an aggregate scoreline of 12-3. The Socceroos certainly aren’t bad, but they’re still second best.
