Louis van Gaal on Victor Valdes: ‘There is no place for that player’

Pro tip: Don’t make Manchester United’s manager angry.

Last season, Manchester United signed Victor Valdes on a free transfer, knowing full well that the former Barcelona goalkeeper would need a fair bit of time to fully recover from torn knee ligaments suffered late in the previous season. He would only make one start and one appearance off the bench for United, and this summer there's been some buzz that he might be set to leave the club after just one year, which was spent rehabbing.

Now, that buzz has taken a turn for the stunning worse after Louis van Gaal responded to questions about why he left Valdes out of Manchester’s traveling squad for their tour of the United States. Brace yourself.

Now that we know exactly how van Gaal feels, it will be shocking to see Valdes pull on a Manchester United shirt again. That means we should probably be paying closer attention to the rumors starting to percolate of a move to Valencia, where he could replace Diego Alves, who Valdes will sympathize with after he, too, tore knee ligaments late in the season.

Valdes, unsurprisingly, disagrees with van Gaal. He wants you to know about the Under-21 games he played in.

With David De Gea’s status far from certain as well, given Real Madrid’s persistent interest in the Spaniard, this will also likely kick Manchester’s search for another goalkeeper into high gear. Let’s just hope the new one is willing to do what van Gaal wants him to do.
