Incredibly, only one of Mexico or Costa Rica will participate in the semifinals of the Gold Cup. Both finished second in their groups, so they’ve been matched up against each other in the quarterfinals on Sunday.

Two of CONCACAF’s best square off a round earlier than they should have.

Costa Rica are without World Cup hero Keylor Navas, and while Esteban Alvarado has been adequate, he certainly hasn’t been heroic. Joel Campbell has been disappointing thus far, and depending on your point of view, he was either rested or benched in his team’s last group stage game.
Mexico have switched between a back three and four, achieving bad results in both setups. They struggled to create chances in a 0-0 draw against Guatemala and were awful defensively in a dramatic 4-4 draw with Trinidad and Tobago.
Despite their four goals conceded against T&T, Mexico will stick with a 3-5-2 formation against Costa Rica, with 'Maza' Francisco Rodriguez -- the man at fault for most of the goals, including the winner -- at the heart of defense again. Giovani dos Santos has picked up a knock, so Oribe Peralta will play up top in his place. Unlike Miguel Herrera, Los Ticos boss Paulo Wanchope hasn't revealed anything about his team.
