There’s a clash of footballing titans in California on Saturday, as Barcelona take on Manchester United.

Having pretty comfortably seen off a couple of North American clubs in the shape of Mexico’s Club América and the United States’ San Jose Earthquakes, Manchester United face their first real pre-season test when they go up against reigning European champions Barcelona at Levi’s Stadium in California on Saturday.

It’ll be the first chance United coach Louis van Gaal gets to see his multiple summer signings face some of the very best in Europe, and it should be worth a watch.

Barça head into the game having played only one pre-season match so far, in which goals from Luis Suárez and Sergi Roberto helped them to see off LA Galaxy 2-1. It wasn’t the most convincing of performances, despite coach Luis Enrique fielding a very strong team. The Catalans will no doubt be looking for an improvement against much sterner opposition.

Fun Barcelona fringe player to watch: Munir

19-year-old attacker Munir made his league debut for Barcelona last season, and went on to appear 10 times in La Liga for the Catalan club. He also made his international debut, with only Bojan Krkic and Josep Samitier having represented Spain at full international level at a younger age. It’s clear he’s got a very big future -- the question now is whether he’s got a part to play at present.

Fun Manchester United fringe player to watch: Andreas Pereira

Brazil youth international Andreas Pereira was tipped as one of the players that could prove a big point stateside, and so far he hasn’t disappointed. He’s played 45 minutes of both of United’s games so far, where his creativity and goalscoring prowess have contributed to standout performances. If he continues in this vein of form, he could soon be forcing his way into contention for a spot in United’s first team.

Compared to other friendlies, is this worth my time?

This friendly represents both clubs’ first real test of the season, which makes it interesting in itself. We’ll get to see how new signings on both sides cope against some of the toughest opposition in Europe. As far as friendlies go, it’s worth watching. 7/10.
