Must watch: Atlético Madrid vs. Barcelona

Depending on what you think of Bayern Munich and Manchester City, it’s possible that these are the two best teams in Europe at the moment. Atléti went through massive turnover this summer, but their squad came out stronger for it, and they look ready to push La Liga’s top two again. Barca have looked a bit shaky in their opening matches, but they might have just been looking ahead to this one all along. It’ll be a great early indicator of what kind of title race we’ll have in La Liga this season.

Must watch II: Inter Milan vs. AC Milan

These are Italy’s two most popular teams abroad, but they’ve both been poor for the last three seasons. New ownership and dramatic transfer moves were supposed to springboard them back into Champions League, but Roma and Juventus look firmly entrenched as Italy’s top two. There is likely only room for one Milan team in Serie A’s top three, and we’ll find out who’s better positioned to challenge for that place on Sunday.

Best early Saturday game: Bayern Munich vs. Augsburg

Since this is at the Allianz Arena, Bayern will probably roll, but Augsburg are not pushovers. They put together a great season last year, mostly based on their solid organization and defense, so they might be able to frustrate Bayern. However, their attack looks awful, so it would be surprising if they found a goal.

Best early Sunday game: Schalke vs. Mainz

There are a lot of decent games during Saturday’s early shift, but nothing stands out as spectacular. This should be the pick of the bunch for people who like speed and goals, though. Expect a pretty wide-open game in which both teams manage to score.

This weekend’s special: River Plate vs. Boca Juniors

We can only hope that this is nothing like the last competitive meeting between Buenos Aires’ two biggest clubs, when Boca supporters sprayed tear gas into the players’ tunnel, rendering some River players unable to compete. Boca were kicked out of Copa Libertadores for that, allowing River to advance and eventually win the South American title.

Both teams are doing well in the Primera this year, with Boca in second and River in fifth. However, they had very different transfer windows. River lost Matias Kranevitter and Romiro Funes Mori to Europe, while Boca brought back the legendary Carlos Tevez. River also brought in one of their most popular former players, Javier Saviola, though it’s been years since he was prolific in front of goal.

Because the Argentine government loves soccer fans from around the globe, all games have to be streamed online for free. You can catch Boca-River in gorgeous HD on YouTube, via Futbol Para Todos.
