The two biggest teams in Argentina, Boca Juniors and River Plate, face off in one of the world’s biggest rivalry games.
Boca had the more positive summer of two teams, adding club icon Carlos Tevez from Juventus. River, meanwhile, lost some of their best players. Ramiro Funes Mori moved to Everton, while Matias Kranevitter went to Atlético Madrid.
Last time these two teams played, in the Copa Libertadores, a Boca fan attacked River players with tear gas. Their game was cancelled because of it and River went on to win the competition after Boca was tossed out. Because of concerns about violence, there will be 9,000 police at the Monumental.
Boca are missing two key players due to injury, Pablo Pérez and Nicolás Colazo. Tevez and Fernando Gago missed out last week due to international duty, but are expected to start this match. Jonathan Calleri is out due to suspension. River’s loss of Funes Mori in the transfer market is made worse by the fact that central defender Jonathan Maidana is dealing with an injury. He’s a game-time decision. Emanuel Mammana could play after recovering from a calf injury, while Leonel Vangioni is expected to be out.
